Reader Recipe: Post Bike Ride Smoothie

Today, I received a very kind email and smoothie recipe from Candy Steele, a Zola fan and Blender Diaries reader in Hudson, IA.  Candy said she always keeps some Zola Acai Original juice in the freezer as she likes it a little slushy, whether in a smoothie or in a glass!

Here’s Candy’s Perfect Post Bike Ride Smoothie Recipe:

  • Blue Bunny Light Yogurt
  • One banana
  • Zola Acai Original
  • Handful of Chia seeds
  • Handful of ice

Put all ingredients in a blender and voila!

Candy also sent through a photo of her smoothie ingredients — we need to get her some more Zola, she still has the old bottles! :)

The Smoothie Guy in Men’s Fitness!

I am very proud to announce that the smoothie guy, aka yours truly was featured on page 28 in the August issue of Men’s Fitness in a story about how to make the perfect smoothie.  Its a great article that teaches you about proportions, what to buy, tricks of the trade and how to master your blender.  It even includes my famous  PB&J smoothie recipe.

We All Scream For Ice Cream: Banana Split Smoothie

I made the kids a special treat last night – banana split smoothies – I’ll admit they are not the healthiest smoothies, but they are so very delicious.

If you’re craving a banana split, why not bring the split to the smoothie?  banana split

Banana Split Smoothie

  • 1/4 cup of orange juice
  • 4 ripe bananas
  • 8 oz. crushed pineapple, drained
  • ½ cup strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tbs of agave or honey
  • 3 tbs of yogurt
  • 3 heaped tbs of vanilla ice cream
  • ***Optional garnish: whipped cream, chocolate syrup

Blend all ingredients with the exception of the garnish until smooth.  Pour into large glasses and then add the garnish.

Drink Your Vegetables!

I know how difficult it can be to get kids to eat their greens each day, but let’s face it, most of us adults struggle to get our recommended servings each day.  And we have so many excuses – not enough time, always on the go, I skip lunch, I skip breakfast – trust me, I’ve tried them all.

ZolaSmoothie-SSTruth is, getting your daily fix of fruits and veggies is easy if you incorporate a green smoothie into your daily routine – here are a few recipe ideas for green smoothies at home or try Zola’s Superfood Smoothie, with 1500mg of green micronutrients such as Spirulina and Chlorella, as a grab and go option.

Sweet Veggie Smoothie Blend:

  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1 cup of sliced apple
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup sliced carrots
  • 1/2 cup of cucumber (peeled and sliced)
  • 2 cups of ice
  • a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon

Blend this vegetable smoothie until smooth.

Greener and Meaner Smoothie

  • 1  Carrot (chopped)
  • 4  Florets of Broccoli or handful of brussel sprouts (chopped)
  • 2  Handfuls of Spinach
  • 1  Apple (chopped)
  • 2  Oranges (peeled and quartered)
  • Orange Juice to dilute

Blend this vegetable smoothie until smooth.

Ask The Smoothie Guy: Frozen vs. Fresh Fruit?

People are always asking me about fresh vs. frozen fruit for smoothies – which is better? How much do I use? Should I still use ice?  Do I still need to add juice?

First of all, both will work just fine – if you just went to the Farmer’s Market and have a fridge full of fresh fruit goodies, I say blend them up!  If you’re a little low on fresh produce, I’d be wiling to bet you have some frozen fruit hiding in your freezer. raspberries

Here are a few best practices for adding the fruit to your smoothies – whether frozen or fresh:

  • If you use frozen fruit, you do NOT need ice – the frozen fruit will give it a good consistency and of course, make it cold
  • If you use fresh fruit, you will need to lower the juice by 1-2oz and add approx 2-4oz ice to taste.  Ice will dilute the flavor a bit, but will add some coldness and thickness
  • For frozen fruit smoothies, its best to add the juice first, then the banana, then the frozen fruit.  Will help it blend
  • For fresh fruit smoothies, its best to add the juice, then the banana and fresh fruit and then the ice.  Again, this will help it blend.
