Forbes Lists the World’s Top 5 Happiest Cities

Monday, September 14th, 2009

A recent Forbes article revealed the world’s top 5 happiest cities and it was not surprising to see Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the top of that list.   There is just something in the air (or maybe in the Acai) that makes Brazil such a special place.  Hats off to Brazil (and acai) from everyone at Zola!

Happiness really is contagious -just check out my daughter after enjoying a Zola Acai smoothie. :)   Isn’t she adorable?

Drink Your Vegetables!

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I know how difficult it can be to get kids to eat their greens each day, but let’s face it, most of us adults struggle to get our recommended servings each day.  And we have so many excuses – not enough time, always on the go, I skip lunch, I skip breakfast – trust me, I’ve tried them all.

ZolaSmoothie-SSTruth is, getting your daily fix of fruits and veggies is easy if you incorporate a green smoothie into your daily routine – here are a few recipe ideas for green smoothies at home or try Zola’s Superfood Smoothie, with 1500mg of green micronutrients such as Spirulina and Chlorella, as a grab and go option.

Sweet Veggie Smoothie Blend:

  • 1 cup of sliced apple
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup sliced carrots
  • 1/2 cup of cucumber (peeled and sliced)
  • 2 cups of ice
  • a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon

Blend this vegetable smoothie until smooth.

Greener and Meaner Smoothie

Ask The Smoothie Guy: Frozen vs. Fresh Fruit?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

People are always asking me about fresh vs. frozen fruit for smoothies – which is better? How much do I use? Should I still use ice?  Do I still need to add juice?

First of all, both will work just fine – if you just went to the Farmer’s Market and have a fridge full of fresh fruit goodies, I say blend them up!  If you’re a little low on fresh produce, I’d be wiling to bet you have some frozen fruit hiding in your freezer. raspberries

Here are a few best practices for adding the fruit to your smoothies – whether frozen or fresh:

  • If you use frozen fruit, you do NOT need ice – the frozen fruit will give it a good consistency and of course, make it cold
  • If you use fresh fruit, you will need to lower the juice by 1-2oz and add approx 2-4oz ice to taste.  Ice will dilute the flavor a bit, but will add some coldness and thickness
  • For frozen fruit smoothies, its best to add the juice first, then the banana, then the frozen fruit.  Will help it blend
  • For fresh fruit smoothies, its best to add the juice, then the banana and fresh fruit and then the ice.  Again, this will help it blend.

Hope this helps!

The Ultimate Breakfast Smoothie

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

When I watch TV, I feel like there’s always a new “ultimate” breakfast sandwich, breakfast burrito or hash brown and egg smorgasbord being advertised at some fast food joint.  To join in the trend, I developed a healthier alternative — the Ultimate Breakfast Smoothie — it’s a combination of all my favorite breakfast foods in a blender.  granola

The Ultimate Breakfast Smoothie

8-10oz Vanilla Soymilk

1 Cup   Frozen Banana Chunks

½ Cup  Favorite Granola

*Tasty Treat – add 2-3oz peanut butter

Energy in a Bottle: Fueling up for the Trans Tahoe Swim 2009

Monday, July 27th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago, I participated in the Trans Tahoe Relay Swim which is a relay race across the width of Lake Tahoe (about 12 miles) with Team Zola .  This was the second year that Team Zola competed in the race and the team trained really hard by swimming in the PCA masters program in Redwood City.  Plus, it was a great excuse for Damon and I to get surf time in as there is no better swim training than paddling out on a board!

Here’s Team Zola gearing up….

Tahoe Swim6

The race is made up of teams of six, each person swims for about 30 minutes and again for 15 until the race is complete – relay style.  It was an amazing and somewhat chilly experience – even though it was a perfect 80 degree sunny day on the lake, the water was a very cool 60 degrees (no wetsuits allowed).  Brrr!

The big swim…

Tahoe Swim5

Since I knew I wouldn’t be able to blend up some pre-race fuel once I was out on the lake, I brought a cooler full of Zola Energy Smoothies to help our team get fueled up and ready for our big swim.  The Energy smoothie is perfect for endurance sports activities because it not only contains 80mg of natural caffeine per bottle to provide sustained energy but also blends exotic Caja Fruit and Açaí using a boost of Yerba Mate, Green Tea and natural Guaraná seed for great taste.

I definitely felt the boost as I was paddling my way across the lake.

Would love to hear from anyone else who participated in the Trans Tahoe Swim – what did you do to get ready for the race? Check out our race day video here: Trans Tahoe Swim 2009
